Recreational Vessel Skipper (PER)

The Recreational Vessel Skipper (PER) is an intermediate nautical certification that allows the holder to operate larger recreational vessels with more freedoms than the Basic Navigation Skipper (PNB). It is one of the most popular certifications in recreational boating due to the breadth of its authorizations.

Authorizations of the Recreational Vessel Skipper (PER):

Allowed Types of Vessels:

Motor and sailing vessels up to 15 meters in length. In some jurisdictions, the length can be extended to 24 meters with additional qualification practices.

Navigation Distance:

Permits navigation up to 12 nautical miles from the coast. Also allows crossings between islands within the same archipelago (e.g., within the Balearic or Canary Islands).

Night Navigation:

Unlike the PNB, the PER allows navigation both day and night, enabling longer trips.

Jet Skis:

The PER also authorizes the operation of jet skis without class restrictions, provided they are not used for commercial or rental purposes.

Optional Authorization Expansion:

With additional practices, authorizations can be extended: Length up to 24 meters. Navigation between the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, provided the specific training and practices are completed.

Requirements for Obtaining the PER:

To obtain the Recreational Vessel Skipper certification, the following are required:

Theoretical Exam: Covers navigation, safety, meteorology, maritime legislation, and more.

Safety and Navigation Practices: Minimum of 16 hours of practice on a motorboat.

Radio Communication Practices: A 12-hour theoretical-practical course for VHF radio operation.

Sailing Qualification Practices (if sailing vessels are to be operated): Additional 16 hours of practice.
